I prefer to think of November as the perfect balance between autumn foliage and the start of winter. With crisp air, cities begin to prepare for the festive season. You’ll still have the opportunity to do some ‘leaf peeping’, see the best cities without the traffic, and enjoy the cabin ambiance before the eerie chill of full-fledged winter.
1. Salt Lake City, Utah
If you ask me, Autumn is never long enough. If you want to get the most out of your leaf-peeping experience, Salt Lake City is the place to go. Surrounded by alpine slopes and ski resorts, it serves as the starting point for outdoor autumn excursions.
Salt Lake City also has plenty of indoor activities: concert venues for crowds of 20 to 20,000; restaurants from all over the world and a thriving foodie scene at low-cost prices; blockbuster theatres and art house indies; ballet, opera, orchestra, and theatre worthy of much less convenient metropolises; museums; malls; and professional basketball, soccer, baseball, and hockey. Don’t forget to see Temple Square, which features a gothic-and-granite Goliath statue.
2. Charlotte, North Carolina
Flannel is the national outfit in Charlotte, North Carolina, and I support it. Cool temps make it an ideal month to visit Freedom Park or hike around Crowders Mountain State Park. The state is notoriously peaceful, which allows for a more comfortable autumn season.

November also brings cooler weather, which pairs well with seasonal delights such as toasty pretzels and Philly cheesesteaks. If you enjoy attending functions, the Franklin Square Holiday Festival begins in mid-November. With plenty of food, shops, a light display spectacle, and kid-friendly activities, the festival will get you ready for winter.
